Pro Golf Lessons with Dean Hartman (Lesson 3: Perfect Posture)

Posted under Pro Golfers

THE purpose of good posture is to allow your body to turn freely and easily. Your upper body or shoulders will turn the most and the easiest if your spine is strait and your body is in balance. Your lower body, primarily your hips, will turn more freely if your weight is on your right hip joint at address. To get into proper posture, stand erect with your spine straight. This would be an ideal position for the body to turn but in golf you have to get your hips back out of your way so that your arms can swing the club. Therefore, from this erect position, simply push your hips back out of your way while keeping the spine straight. Flexing the knees You will need to push your hips back far enough so that your arms can hang freely under your shoulders and create space of about one hand distance between the butt end of the club and your body. Now you just have to balance yourself from heel to toe. This will require a slight flex in the knees. Being balance on your feet will contribute to a freer body turn. Too much weight on your toes or your heels will restrict your turn. The last step is a slight tilt of the spine away from your target, especially with your woods. This slight tilt will set about 60 % of your weight on your right hip joint. The hip joint works like a ball and socket with allows the hips to turn. If you weight is slightly on the right hip joint, the hip turn becomes much more efficient. This also serves to eliminate or minimize the dreaded reverse pivot
